The hunt started with a phone call to Jerry Mcphearson of Montana decoy. Jerry graciously sent me 2 antelope decoys and a cow. These decoys according to Brett Landwehr(my guide) would entice a big buck goat to run in and give me a clean shot. I have had a few friends who went on this hunt and said, there is nothing like it. This would be a true test to our Medalist gear, as well, as the true flight of my Innerloc broadheads in the wide open windy prairie ground.

I practiced with my Pearson bow, at long ranges and had my 100 grain carbon tuners tuned to perfection. All of my Medalist was washed and in scent free bags for the long 2200 mile drive to Montana. On the way J-Rome (Innerlocs Outthere producer) stopped off at Treetop outfitters and hunted for a day. I shot a doe, for confidence and we continued toward Montana.

As we got closer and headed through South Dakota Wyoming and into Montana, the Antelope were everywhere. The drive was so much fun, to see Mule deer, whitetails antelope, and coyotes made the time go by fast. When we arrived in camp at there lodge, one of the hunters had taken a once in a lifetime goat. He would score close to 80 inches and was over 16 inches long. This made my nights sleep very long.

The first morning out I was teamed up with Rich Gumberg who would be my guide for our adventure. Rich had a very good idea were a lot of good goats were and wasted no time putting us on them. The first goat we stalked up on, was with 22 does. We had a 1 mile stalk, and got within 119 yards. He got J-rome in place, and me in place and popped open the Montana Decoy. In seconds this goat was on us. I missed….And that was not the last goat I missed. 4 total the first day. The problem was The terrain was tuff for me to judge and I had no time to look through my Leopold range finder.

I could see the frustration in rich and J-Romes face. The next day they told me if I miss they were going to strip me down naked and put me on a fire ant hill, and leave me. The next morning I did not miss. I shot a goat at 18 yards that attacked the decoy, practically. The Innerloc hit its mark and the goat died 25 yards later on film. I was so pumped. In fact I even had a Stan Potts moment needing a minute to collect my thoughts.The Montana decoy, the Medalist and the Innerlocs proved to be to much for them Speed goats.

Rich , Brett JimBob Steve Donnie and Josh, Thanks for such a great hunt. Landwehr Outfitters is 100 percent this year on shot oppunity and on 2 people did not connect with there shots all year. The spot and stalk during the rut is the way to go. Give them a look for your next Antelope Mule deer or Elk hunt. Before you go I would check out the Innerloc line of broadheads. You may have to shoot up to 60 yards, and its important to make sure your heads are tuned well. Medalist clothing is a must. The silvermax kept us cool during the high temps during the middle of the day, and with a great nose, the goats never knew we were there. And don’t forget your Montana decoy…Them Goats can’t resist.

Forty-five minutes later I was ready and willing. The AMS big game retriever was loaded with 640 pound line, and away we went. Bill Kline spotted a set of glowing red eyes. It was a 9 foot 1 gator, and I wasted no time in arrowing the swam lizard. The Medalist Max rain gear kept me dry, during the short rain storm we encountered during the hunt. Both gators were taken in public hunting area. The gators both had some tail missing, so I believe we could add a few inches.
During my stay in Florida, Josh Byrd was in town, and had access to a county wide tag. His friend Ron drew the tag for the same unit I was staying in. After a few days of tuff hunting, he hooked up with Mitch and I and we had a 10 foot gator staring Josh in the face. Unfortunately Josh missed 3 times. He had gator fever…. Josh did manage to shoot a great gator in the 9 foot range later that night on video.
All the gear worked well, the Medalist did its job, and all 3 kills are on video that will air next fall on Innerloc’s OutThere TV.

With cold mornings and warm afternoons, the Medalist proved once again to keep both Kyle and I comfortable, and scent free.

Over the next few days we had several chances to shoot birds, but because we wanted a good show, we passed on several opposites on killing birds. On day 3 Kermit Henning shot a great 4-5 year old Tom. This was his first ever turkey, and first ever kill with black powder. Dave Ehrig, did some great calling, and brought the bird within 15 yards of the blind. On the last day of the hunt, Kyle and I sat in the same filed that Kermit had shot his bird in.
As it got light 1 lone gobbler began gobbling on the ridge just above the field. I chattered on my Hunt Nut box call, and out of no where the bird appeared. I lifted the 10 gauge and watched the gobbler strut for 100 yards toward the blind. At 28 yards I made some smoke. Boom” the gun went off and the smoke cleared. My bird took flight, and I pulled the second hammer and smoked him a second time at 45 yards. The bird dropped out of the air, like a sack of potatoes.
I want to thank all the guys/gals of the NMLRA, I joined for 3 years, and look forward in learning more about the organization, and all the things they do. Kyle and I after filling our tag, got to shoot some trap with black powder, and we loved every second of it. I look forward in going back, and making some more smoke real soon.

I think as an outdoors man, and someone who makes a living from the outdoor industry the most important thing we can do as an outdoors man, is introduce a youngster, or a new person to the outdoors.

I had the chance this past weekend to take my 9 month old out to a friends pond, to introduce her to fishing.  Camryn is no stranger to fish and dead animals, I bring something home on a regular basis. But to have her go out into the outdoors, away from Barney and the Mickey Mouse is very important to her growth. She had a ball, she played with sticks, Grandmas rubber worms, she even tried reeling in a bluegill, and some small bass. Her Grandfather even carried up into one of our deer stands. Camryn and I even went for a short walk into the woods, looking for sheds. the only surprise we had was a small load in her diaper. lol Anyway I just think more parents should stop what there doing every once in awhile, and step out into a park, a farmers pond, and take there little one along, or the neighbors little on or a relative.

Passing on the outdoor heritage is very sacred to me. My grandfather passed it to my dad, and my dad to me. This time it’s my turn, for my little girl to be passed this great thing called the outdoors…

Today I had the chance to hang out with the Reading Royals, during a practice session at the Sovereign center. Head Coach Larry Courville and I spent some time shooting some goals on the ice, and this gave me a chance to get to know Larry before our Spring Turkey hunt next month.

One thing I learned is I am not ready for the NHL. I hope Larry can shoo-ta gun better than I can hit a puck. the cool thing about the Reading Royals players is they are big fans of Medalist. In talking to some players they, were very happy with the performance of Medalist, and looking forward to using in years to come. Larry is a big fan of Medalist and encourages his players to wear it.

In May Larry and I will be heading out to hunt Turkey. we have not scheduled an exact date, but I look forward in calling in a big Tom, and seeing him take a swing, at it. My favorite part of the day was when I asked him about his first NHL goal. It was like he took me back in time, he stood at the point where he took the shot, and he was beaming from ear to ear. larry is a great guy, and I am enjoying getting to know him. I look forward to spending time Out-There in my world, with larry real soon.

350 people filled the Goodwill beneficial, for Cabin Fever 7 held in reading PA

On March 7,2009 I hosted the 7 th annual Cabin fever banquet held in Reading PA. Cabin Fever is a banquet to give back to the community and raise awareness for Breast Cancer through the outdoor industry. 350 people attened and everyone was blown away.

Medalist contributed dozens of hats, and plenty of clothing that was handed out in many different fashions. Door prizes raffles, women raffles and plenty of good food was on hand for the evening. I showed 2 hours of video from the previous year, and as always the blooper section was a  hit. plenty of laughs ripped through the crowd, as different Innerloc’s Out-There members did there thing.

8 Dozen Pink arrows were handed out during the event, in the name of thPink Arrow project. The pink Arrow project is ran by Mary Hale and Victory arrow. Its a breast Cancer awarenss program and it was nice to help them out. Everyone was given a Pink Bow, and Pink popcorn bags filled the room.

Growing up in Pennsylvania the words Scent elimination was not in my vocabulary. I have seen my father bring home countless, whitetail deer that he had shot wearing the same clothing he worked in that day. My father was a mechanic, and he was exposed to car fumes, wd-40, oil, and all the liquids that go with a garage. At 5:00 he would punch out and head to the stand in his blue work uniform, and climb a tree.

As time passed and I started hunting on my own, the clothing I would wear to school, was the clothing I found myself in 20 foot up a tree. I never used scent illuminating sprays, nor did I believe that a special type of garment would better my chances. I shot as many deer as anybody in my town, and I thought I was doing everything in my favor that would increase my chances of killing a deer. I tried placing some of my camo in garbage bags filled with pine cones and leaves, I tried baking soda and water, but it never seemed to make a difference.

In 2001 I started a Video production company called Hunting Extreme Productions. My idea was to buy a camera and start to film TV personalities. A few years later I was introduced to Scent Elimination. I remember the first time I was getting in the truck of Hunters Specialties Pro Staffer Matt Morrett, and seeing all the big fancy green bags, and all the bottles of Scent-away spray. I also remember telling Matt that all that stuff was just a way for a company to make money. I was wrong… Matt and I were heading to John wetstines place in Kansas and Matt was wondering how I kept my clothing scent free. I didn’t. All my clothing was in with my regular everyday clothes. I used Tide with bleach and ultra brightens on all my stuff. At that point Matt almost turned the truck around.

After arriving in camp, Matt took my camo realtree clothing and washed it in Scent-away, and dried them with the Scent-away dryer sheets, and placed scent wafers in a new proto type bag they have been working on. The next morning we had deer in places that they should have smelled us, and they did not. I was hooked on this process.

When I got home after that road trip, in which Matt killed a giant 156 inch 8 point, I figured if that system worked, there had to be more. I bought some Carbon clothing and figured if I use the H.S system with this clothing it would have to work. It worked well, for a while. The problem I had was, the extensive maintaince I had to do, and the lack of washes I was allowed to use on certain products. I found myself getting lazy and not putting the clothing in the dryer as much, and I lost confidence in the clothes. Even though I still sprayed down and used the H.S system my confidence was not there as much as it was when the clothing was new.

While on a trip with H.S I shared a tree with owner David Forbes. I was filming Dave over a food plot that had about 70 deer in it. The deer where down wind up wind, all over. He introduced me to a clothing line that since has changed my style of hunting, and over all opinion for ever. Medalist with SilverMax. Medalist has changed me and my whole family’s outlook on Scent technology in garments, and has made it more comfortable than ever for us to hunt.

Since wearing Medalist, our success rate has gone up, our animal sightings has gone way up, and the length of time spent in the woods has just about given me and my dad divorces. Medalist allows me to wash my clothing without worrying about, messing up the longenjevity of the garment. The lightness and comfort of there lines has made me a more stealthy hunter, as well as a patient hunter. The Silver technology allows me to not worry about sweating when temperatures rise, and freeze when the temperature drops. The Silver also allows me not to worry about bacteria growing on the garment, and then getting into my H.S scent bags. The fact is Medalist is the best clothing I have ever worn. From the socks, to my hat I feel invisible in the woods. If I am on a hunt back in the bush and I want to wash my Medalist, all I have to do is find a water puddle and the clothes can be washed. Who wants to carry a dryer around the bush with them. There is so many more great advantages with Medalist then any Carbon suite out there.

I now host a TV program on the Sportsman channel, Pursuit channel, and Wild TV. My job is to produce the best quality hunting TV program I can. From Florida gator hunting, to Montana Antelope hunting, and even the low temps of Winter hunting in South Dakota, Medalist with Silvermax is the only clothing I where as well as my field producers. Its funny how this story makes a full circle. My dad at one time whore the clothes he work in to hunt, now I where the clothes I work in, to hunt.
