The opening day of the PA rifle season, is like Christmas to most PA residents. The night before you hardly can sleep. You dream of big bucks, and lots of them. With the antler restriction that were placed years ago, the bucks of PA have a chance to gets some age, and some Big bone. This year I was fortunate to shoot a nice 8 point with my bow, letting me only to film on opening day. Now most of what we do on the show is with our bows, tipped with Innerloc Broadheads, but I love to watch a big ol buck fall victim to a bang stick.
This year opening morning: I had the chance to share the stand with one of Innerloc’s Out-There camera men, Steve Ferreri Jr. in Berks County Pa. With our Medalist Max, on we bared the rainy elements and headed to the stand. 200 yards away, would be Steves brother Cory, sitting on a game trail that lead to a thicket that Steve and I were watching. The legal time was 6:38am, and at 6:50am BOOM, the hammer was dropped from Cory’s direction. A nice 4 point, fell under our stand. Now Cory is a Jr. so he can shoot 4 points. Steve and I just laughed, and watched as Cory, tracked the buck to tour stand. As Cory was gutting his deer, we passed on several chances to shoot a doe, and a small 6 point. Cory needed help dragging out his deer so we put the camera down and drug the deer out to the truck. Our morning was over, and for me the day. I had not spent anytime with my baby girl, and my wife, because of a long fall of hunting. Joy and I had made plans to head to the mountains Wed. at noon to do some hunting together. Monday evening and Tuesday was spent packing, all the gear for our trip. (It takes 2 days when packing for a women) I did however get a phone call late Monday night that Mike, field producer for Innerloc’s OutThere had shot a nice 8 point with his son. The deer was shot in Hamburg PA.
Wednesday afternoon we headed North, and noticed a lot of hunters returning home. Some with deer on there trucks, and some with frowns of disappointments. Never the less we were happy just to be together, and heading to Smoking Kneecaps camp in Cameron County PA. Thursday morning Joy and I headed to the stand. I would be wearing my Stalker outfit, and Joy had on heavy base layers, the new vest Bibs, and the Max jacket because it was snowing. I did not worry about Joy getting cold because the Medalist kept her dry and warm. That was good because we sat in the 20 degree weather for 6 hours before her buck decided to come. The buck came out from her left downwind. The deer was feeding on leaves, and had no idea we were there. With my PD-170 rolling the shot was up to her. She waited 2 and a half minutes before pulling the trigger on her 6mm. With the buck in the Leopold scope, and the deers head behind a tree….Boom….The buck jumped in the air, ran 40 yards, and piled up in the 8 inches of snow. Joy was happy, and thankfull. The footage was great, and the perfect ending to the Brossman’s deer season. Joy got on the blood trail, like a hound dog on a coon. The rail lead her to a big Cameron County 7 point, that weighed over 150 pounds. Nice Job JOY!!!
The coolest thing about the hunt was my mom and dad, brought our 6 month old baby girl up, to camp Friday night. My mom and dad were both tagged out in archery but wanted to spend time with us, at deer camp as a family. We kept the deer, in the shed and waited for them to take some quality family photos. I believe if more parents introduced there son/daughter to the outdoors, that America would be a better place. Camryn, was so happy for mommy, and showed in the photos. Once again Medalist proved itself, for its ability to keep you warm, keep you dry, and keep you scent free. To have 2 people in the woods, the first Thursday of the PA rifle season, near public land, and have a 3 1/2 year old buck downwind of you, and him not know your there, and you kill him…Its amazing…no its MEDALIST
