Anytime I get the chance to hunt with my Wife, I go. After hunting for 3 solid months and not seeing my newborn, or my wife Joy, I was ready for some woods time with them. Joy and I planned on hunting in Cameron County PA, the first Thursday of the rifle season, and have my mom and dad bring our baby girl up, Friday evening. With all of our tags filled in Archery thanks to the Innerloc broadheads, and Medalist hunt gear, Joy was the only one left on the roster not to tag a buck. We were gonna change that.
On TuesdayI headed to Medalist to pick up some cold weather gear, that Joy could wear, that would keep her warm in case of a long sit. Medalist equipped her with heavy base layers, an Anchorage Insulated jacket, Anchorage Insulated bibs, and the new fleece vest. This was sure to keep her warm, dry, and scent free.
Wednesday afternoon we headed north to our hunting camp, Smoking Kneecaps camp, located in North Central PA. On the ride up we passed a bunch of hunters returning home, some were successful, and some were not. The weather was perfect, andwith a new blanket of snow on the ground, this was surely going to be a trip to remember. The idea of this trip, was to hunt a food source of acorns, that my dad had found in early fall. The bucks were still cruising, the benches looking for does, and with lack of hunting pressure, the bucks should still be on a normal pattern.
Thursday morning bright andearly, we headed to the stand. I would be filming Joy, trying to kill her 2nd buck ever. The morning greated us with snow flurries, and kept the deer, bedded down longer than expected. We did however see one buck that slipped through the cracks. The turkeys were happy scratching below us, and gave Joy and I some entertainment throughout the morning. At 10 am we decided to go back and eat a snack, because the deer hadn’t moved much early and would have to feed that afternoon. At 11 am we headed back to the same area, and set up for the rest of the day. A flock of turkeys came back through, andmade Joy laugh as they ran around the snow, scratching for acorns, and fighting amongst themselves. At 3:30 pm Joy spotted a deer coming our way. I looked through my binos, and saw it was a nice shooter buck. I turned the camera on, and watched the buck feed towards us at 50 yards. Joy remained calm, andthe Medalist kept both of our scent away form this buck, because he was directly downwind. After 3 minutes of watching the buck feed, Joy pulled the trigger on her 6mm rifle, and watched the deer pile up in the snow. This was a great day, she slammed a great Buck, and it was all on video. The snow looked like a strawberry snow cone, and the trail lead her to a big 7 point buck.
“Thank god for Medalist.” Joy said over and over. The clothing kept her warm, dry and scent-free. I can’t believe 2 of us the opening week of rifle could get away, with what we did considering the buck fed downwind of us for so long. If everyone in PA wore Medalist there wouldn’t be anymore deer…..To see Joys footage and learn more about Innerloc broadheads, and Innerloc’s Out-There go to www.innerloc.com/tv
